muse and musings

Hello! wow it's been a while...
The last project I had to work on at uni was for Fine art - I basically just explored what fascinated me; nature, symbols, body and landscape. I decided to work with photography as I always bang on about doing it but never actually get round to (laziness). But here are the final photos! I used an analogue 35mm camera and a DSLR. + some purple acetate over the lens in the photos of Mali (check her blog out) x

I turned it into a photo diary/zine thing with some musings of mine surrounding the images! Above is the final piece.

BERETS/ZINES

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing good considering it's that time of year when things may start to get stressful & busy again! Also can we take a second to commemorate the sudden and unexpected death of summer this year. RIP. But aside from that, I do start my art foundation tomorrow so that should be really exciting, I'm looking forward to getting back into a routine and of course, devoting my time to being creative! I can't wait to see how my work changes and develops over the next year, especially my fashion and textile work.

Yesterday I came across an amazing hat stall in Convent garden market. I got this gem, a green 80s style beret (that's also very fuzzy!) and I'm actually in love. The designer (I regretfully did not get his name) was extremely talented and was working on a hat as we arrived, of course all the hats are hand made and original. My style of beret was a new one he was working on - and he said he was chatting with Tom Ford (you know, just as you do) and berets are very 'in' and the 80s style is apparently making a comeback.

I thought I'd include a fave summer find in this post. I really love this shirt, I bought it on Depop and have been wearing it so much! The pattern is very unique and is a thin, but sturdy fabric. I love detailed shirts in general - honestly you can never have too many (okay possibly).

Also, exciting news, Sweet Thang, an arts + literary zine for and by black womxn is on their way with Issue No. 2!!! Check out their instagram and be sure to keep up to date with what's happening next with this sweet publication.

FABRICS & SCRIBBLES

Some design ideas/sketches for my project 'Eating Nature'. I really like jumpsuits because I feel like I can exaggerate and play around with symmetry (or a-symmetry) and the heaviness. I decided to do long, extended sleeves and legs to accentuate a kind of heaviness and drag towards to ground and the earth. Also using thicker, heavy fabrics accentuate this feeling. So basically I'm just playing around n thinking and hopefully will start to produce segments of it soon.

EATING NATURE

~ARE YOU LIVING IN THE REAL WORLD?~
~EATING NATURE~

I'm making a multi media project called 'Eating Nature'. Film, fashion and photography. It's summer and I have until September to just do anything and everything so I might as well do something creative with my time. I'm really interested in making random bits of film on my phone - whether it's long, short, cool, shit. anytinggg. I made this moodboard to showcase what kinda vibe this project is taking:

mellow tones but bright, distinct colours, transparent materials, mesh fabrics, prints, natural elements, wind & water, statical and floaty imagery, bodies and the human form - all intertwined with nature.

Due to bordem, I have also been writing some poetry (???) I don't even know if you could call it that but honestly I've found it very therapeutic ...
My friend gave me a good technique for getting your ideas/feels onto paper and that has really helped  - the themes of my writing also heavily correlate with the ideas around Eating Nature.
 'The Rainforest'

"Water rolls off
the moist,
dripping leaves,
into the heavy damp mist
as it engulfs me.
Oh, the transcendence of nature,
the beauty.
Things are crawling beneath me - alive!
The rainforest,
above us all
the clouds, the thunder, the rain.
I fall and immerse myself into the thick,
wet
haze."

HALF-WAY THROUGH

Hi fellow reader, thanx for dropping by.

How are we half-way through 2017 already? It does feel like its been a very long year, but still, time has been going waay too fast. Last week was my graduation and prom which was absolutely looovely - I do not, however, feel grown up at all. Aside from this accelerating pace into exams, uni and all the above, I wanted to look back a lil' bit on this insanely creative (and stressful) few months.
but first, enjoy my lil mood boards  (All pictures found on Tumblr)

1. Internship with Citizens of Humanity

~During the first week of April, I was lucky enough to assist the denim brand Citizens of Humanity with their press day + event, which showcased their new collection as well as exhibited the photography of Giles Duley and his work 'Legacy Of War'. Two months later, not only can I not look at denim in the same way, but Duley's photography continues to chill me, leaving me with absolutely no words to describe them. Please have a look at his stories and pictures for yourself. It was honestly so awesome getting this insight into the fashion industry as well as into event planning. Throughout the week, I helped with things from creating the event playlist and pressing the amazing garments to rushing to buy mountains of Tupperware containers. I would definitely want to work with them again and get further internships of this sector!

2. Barbican

~Much more recently, I was a part of the 'Barbican Young Visual Arts Group' which ended with a collectively curated exhibition where we showcased our work. w o w i cannot even explain how much of an invaluable experience it was - all in all it was just a chance to play around with art, explore visual culture and produce pieces of work inspired by the Barbican and the world. Hear for it yourself here: a beautifully created promo video that was made on the day of the showcase. For the showcase, entitled 'Are You Sitting Comfortably?', I produced 18 large-scale prints, inspired by the style of  'ABC' cards - but all together spelling out the words 'DECOLONISE YOUR MIND'. See my last post for pics of them! It was chiefly inspired by the title of one of magazine 'STRIKE!'s previous issues and of course it is a message that I stand for deeply. STRIKE has honestly changed me a bit (a lot) and I think that the topics they address are well rounded, relevant and extremely real. It's everything I stand for and hope to be able perpetuate and share with people. nOT only are they well researched and accurate, they just don't give a shit really and talk about things in an informative and engaging way. I would definitely recommend that you check out this publication - I'm certain you will not regret it.  "STRIKE! Magazine is a platform for those involved in grassroots resistance, anti-oppression politics, and the philosophies and creative exspressions surrounding these movements."

3. What Keeps You Awake At Night?

~An awesome film project came my way last month called 'What Keeps You Awake At Night?'. 12 people were chosen to stay over in the bedrooms of Battersea Arts Centre and answer that question in the dead of night. There was a camera and two lights set up in the bedroom and we were asked to film ourselves several times (for variety) and respond to the question in any way we liked. Some people produced scripts of spoken word or poetry, others performed and others just sat there and thought aloud. What intrigued me about the project was the breadth of different responses that could arise from that one question. The diversity of people chosen to take part in the project was also really cool and I cannot wait to see the final 12 short films that are being edited by amazing film maker Erin Hopkins.

cheetah prints + zine-y tings

These are a few of my ABC cards that I made for the exhibition 'Are You Sitting Comfortably?' at the Barbican (i'll post a lil' about it in my next post!) These are made by hand and I used scanned family photos for the base. They were enlarged and scaled to A2 size and hung up in the Barbican foyer. I did not intend for the photos to overtly correlate with the words ('Now', 'Invention', 'Creation' etc), but at times I did think that certain words would correlate nicely with this certain photograph.

Rather than going through the whole alphabet, I chose 18 special letters that altogether displayed the message 'DECOLONISE YOUR MIND'.

'like children, wander about this earth in a daze'

- a zine of  memory +  sonder +  fucking, fucking growth.

I'm trying to make my life cheetah printed at the moment because life is fast and feisty as fuck. (no one cares abt your vain selfies cleo!)
